En août 2014, JR est invité à travailler sur le sud d'Ellis Island, un complexe hospitalier abandonné en face de la Statue de la Liberté - et la porte d'entrée aux Etats-Unis pour 12 millions d'immigrants, entre 1892 et 1954. Il revisite les archives d'Ellis Island et crée une exposition permanente d'installations à taille réelle dans ces bâtiments si chargés d'histoires. 

Art Spiegelman, auteur du célèbre roman graphique Maus, a immigré aux États-Unis en 1951. Il collabore avec JR sur ce livre, en dessinant sur des photographies et racontant les histoires notables d'immigrants passés par Ellis Island.
