Description

Retour à la Caverne, Collage, Paris, 2023 is the new hand-finished lithograph from JR's most recent project Retour à la CaverneReferencing the stage sets of epic operas, Retour à la caverne, Act I shows a vast cavern entrance filled with rocks and light. Framing these natural formations, the Palais Garnier appears to be stuck between times. The 19th-century romantic architecture of the building seems to be in ruins, yet contemporary scaffolding is present, a reference to the fragility of Parisian monuments and the necessary work that physically supports their eternality. Walking up the Avenue de l’Opéra, Retour à la caverne, Act I  beckoned viewers to peer inside, invoking Plato’s allegory of the cave - a place of knowledge and transmission.
